Dementia Friendly Choirs

Discover the Joy of a Dementia-Friendly Choir

A dementia-friendly choir is a welcoming community where people living with memory loss and their care partners sing, connect, and celebrate the joy of music—no experience required. These choirs focus on confidence, belonging, and creativity, shifting the story of dementia from decline to hope and connection.

Who Participates?

  • People living with memory loss — enjoy music, connect with others, and express themselves in a supportive space.
  • Care partners (family or friends) — sing alongside loved ones, sharing meaningful time together.
  • Volunteers and community members — help create a warm, welcoming environment by assisting at rehearsals or joining in the singing.

Everyone is welcome. Together, we focus on strengths, creativity, and connection—not diagnosis or ability.

Where Are Choirs Held?

Choirs meet in familiar, accessible spaces such as libraries, community centers, faith communities, senior centers, or arts organizations—places where everyone feels at home.

How It Works

  • Rehearsals are held weekly. Each begins with a warm welcome and gentle vocal warm-ups—often filled with laughter and lighthearted moments.
  • Music is chosen to spark confidence and enjoyment. Familiar songs mix with new pieces, creating a balance of comfort and discovery.
  • Sessions last 45–90 minutes and include breaks and social time. The atmosphere is flexible and relaxed, allowing everyone to join at their own pace.
  • Performances celebrate the group’s accomplishments. At the end of a season, choirs share their music with family, friends, and the wider community.
